Gareth Southgate has named his 23-man England World Cup squad for Russia 2018, which includes two uncapped players.

Goalkeeper Nick Pope, who has been impressive for Burnley this campaign, is in after his first call-up in March, while Liverpool full-back Trent Alexander-Arnold will hope his summer ends in positive mood with success for both the Reds in the Champions League Final and for his country as part of the England World Cup squad.

With an average age of just 25, the England World Cup squad is young and includes just five players who went Brazil in 2014: Gary Cahill, Jordan Henderson, Phil Jones, Raheem Sterling and Danny Welbeck.

Goalkeeper Joe Hart and Arsenal midfielder Jack Wilshere have not been included, along with Southampton left-back Ryan Bertrand.
“I believe this is a squad we can be excited about,” Southgate said.

“It is a young group but with some really important senior players, so I feel the balance of the squad is good, both in terms of its experience, its character and also the positional balance.”

Southgate has also picked five players as standby for his England World Cup squad, in case of any injuries between now and 4 June, when the Three Lions boss must submit his final squad list to FIFA.

Pope’s Burnley teammates Tom Heaton, who has been kept out of the Turf Moor side since his return from a long-term injury, and defender James Tarkowski, who made his debut against Italy in March, are back ups. Bournemouth’s Lewis Cook, who also made his England bow against the Azzurri, West Brom’s Jake Livermore and Liverpool midfielder Adam Lallana are also waiting in the wings in case they are required.

England start their Group G campaign against Tunisia on 18 June, before games against Panama and Belgium.
